In the first days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian journalist Dmytro Hiliuk was captured by Russian forces and taken to a detention center in Russia. For nearly three years, he lived in inhumane conditions: constant hunger, beatings, humiliation, and isolation. In this interview, Hiliuk recounts how hunger becomes an obsession, how violence is used for intimidation, and what it means to spend years without seeing sunlight or people’s faces.
