SA\u015eA, 5 YEARS OLD, REFUGEE IN COCIERI (DUB\u0102SARI, MOLDOVA) FROM PERVOMAISK (UKRAINE), three weeks after the start of the war: <\/p>

“<\/span>It was announced on the news <\/span>that the sound of the siren means that<\/span> a Russian missile is flying toward us <\/span><\/span>,<\/span> to destroy a house in Ukraine.<\/span> I <\/span>remember<\/span> the explosions, <\/span>I heard them while I was putting away<\/span><\/span> my toys at home. At one explosion I couldn’t understand <\/span> what it was<\/span> and I asked<\/span>:<\/span><\/p>

– <\/span>Mom, something strange happened, what was that sound?<\/span> <\/div>
– <\/span>Most likely<\/span>, <\/span>an explosion<\/span>!<\/span> <\/div>

Then we woke up and everyone was writing that <\/span>Ukraine <\/span>was being<\/span> bombed. <\/span>I<\/span> didn’t understand<\/span> what that meant<\/span>. <\/span>I thought maybe<\/span> mom<\/span> had dropped something<\/span>.”<\/span><\/span> <\/p>

This is just a fragment from<\/span> <\/span>the<\/span> <\/span>vi<\/span>deo <\/span>interview<\/span> given by<\/span> Sa<\/span>sha,<\/span> one of the youngest refugees from Ukraine, less than three weeks after the war began. <\/span>The experience of war and exile seems to have transformed him overnight into a wise old man.<\/span> <\/p>

Watch Sasha’s story in the r<\/span>eportage <\/span>“Children of War”<\/span>,<\/span> alongside other Ukrainians<\/span> who are part of the first wave<\/span> of re<\/span>fugees sheltered in Dub\u0103sari. <\/span>By <\/span> <\/span>that time<\/span><\/span>, over <\/span>3.7 million people<\/span> had left<\/span> Ukraine<\/span>. <\/span>Through <\/span>the Palanca Border Crossing<\/span> alone, more than <\/span>136.000 <\/span> <\/span>children<\/span> had entered at the border crossing points with Ukraine. <\/span><\/p>

Nastea,<\/span> a refugee with her daughter and her cats, <\/span>Olga and <\/span>P<\/span>ictori\u021ba<\/span> are other Ukrainian refugees in Dub\u0103sari whose story<\/span> <\/span>appears <\/span>in the reportage <\/span>“C<\/span>hildren of War<\/span>“<\/span>.<\/span> <\/p>

The refugees’ impressions are moving: <\/span><\/p>

\u2022 <\/span>“T<\/span>he Dnipro and the Dniester are like brothers. I came here<\/span> (i.e., to Dub\u0103sari)<\/span>, but it feels as if I came to some <\/span>more <\/span>distant relatives<\/span>“<\/span>,<\/span><\/div>
\u2022 <\/span>“It’s peaceful here, nothing reminds me of war. They share everything with us (i.e., the Moldovans), it’s very touching”<\/span>,<\/span><\/div>
\u2022 <\/span>“In two weeks the war will be over. The airspace must be closed. Ukraine will be rebuilt, it will be very beautiful, more beautiful than it was”<\/span>.<\/span> (the child Sasha)<\/span><\/div>

<\/span><\/p>

RUSLAN CANDIT<\/span>, <\/span>THE “GUARDIAN ANGEL” OF REFUGEE FAMILIES<\/span><\/p>

Ruslan Candit took<\/span> special leave to<\/span> help the refugees, together with others like him. Together they help them with everything they need, <\/span>providing <\/span>clothes<\/span> and<\/span> food.<\/span> <\/p>

“I suffer with them,”<\/span> says Ruslan <\/span>in the interview. He knows <\/span>from his own experience <\/span>how painful refugee life is and how <\/span>traumatic<\/span> it will be<\/span>, later on, <\/span>for today’s children<\/span> – he<\/span> himself was a refugee with his family in 1992<\/span>, during the Transnistria War<\/span>. He was <\/span><\/span> a small <\/span>child at that time<\/span>.<\/span> <\/p>

“I still remember everything, those moments never leave my mind. It will be the same for these children,”<\/span> Ruslan adds.<\/span> <\/p>

<\/span><\/p>

Beyond<\/span> being a reportage about individual cases, <\/span>“<\/span>Children of War<\/span>” <\/span>is a document<\/span> of a <\/span>phenomenon<\/span>. <\/span>It is about something that war can never defeat. It is a<\/span>bout humanity and hope. A<\/span>bout how kindness, <\/span>love and <\/span>empathy<\/span> <\/span>save live<\/span>s<\/span> and <\/span>bring people and countries together.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
